FAQs
1. What is Telehealth Psychotherapy?
Telehealth psychotherapy, also known as online therapy or e-therapy, involves the provision of mental health services and support through digital platforms, such as video conferencing, phone calls, messaging apps, and other online communication tools.
Ashleigh uses the Zoom platform and provides password-protected individual Zoom meeting links to each of her clients at the beginning of therapy.
2. How effective is telehealth psychotherapy compared to in-person therapy?
Research indicates that telehealth psychotherapy is generally as effective as in-person therapy for a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Studies have shown comparable outcomes in symptom reduction and patient satisfaction.
3. Why do people choose to do telehealth psychotherapy?
Convenience: Patients can access therapy from the comfort of their homes, reducing travel time and reduced mental load in scheduling appointments.
Accessibility: It provides access to therapy for individuals in regional and remote areas, as well as the opportunity to see specialists in the area of your concerns that may have otherwise been too far away to see in person.
Flexibility: More flexibility in scheduling.
Continuity of Care: Facilitates ongoing treatment without interruption during circumstances that prevent in-person visits.
Personal Preference: Some clients report preferring online sessions as they feel it reduces the intensity of the treatment to levels they feel better able to sit through.
4. Are there any limitations to telehealth psychotherapy?
Technical Issues: Reliable internet access and technology is needed, which might be a barrier for some clients. Captions can also be unreliable, though every effort is made to rectify this for those who need them.
Privacy Concerns: Ensuring confidentiality can be more challenging in non-clinical settings. E.g. having a space that is private.
Less Non-Verbal Communication: Some nuances of face-to-face interaction, like body language, can be harder to interpret. Thus every effort is placed in building a strong, trusting rapport with clients to ensure open and clear communication throughout treatment.
5. Who is telehealth psychotherapy good for?
Individuals who are comfortable with technology, have a private space for sessions, and do not require intensive, in-person interventions are good candidates for telehealth psychotherapy. Those experiencing a severe mental health crisis or conditions requiring close monitoring would be recommended to seek in-person care.
6. Are psychology sessions via telehealth covered by Medicare and NDIS?
Since mid-2020, Medicare have expanded coverage to include telehealth services for all medicare-eligible residents living in Australia. It is the same rebate as for face-to-face sessions.
NDIS covered psychology sessions in relation to psychosocial goals are available to individuals who have this as part of their NDIS plans. Speak to your support coordinator or plan manager about whether this is available to you.
*NDIS funds and Medicare funded sessions cannot be used at the same time.
Coverage with private health insurance companies can vary, so it's essential to check with your insurance provider regarding specific requirements.
7. What if I need an Interpreter?
If you require an interpreter (Auslan or a language other than English), the interpreter simply joins the video call, ensuring real-time translation of the session. Please notify Ashleigh if you would like assistance with booking your preferred interpreting service.
8. What should I expect during my first telehealth psychotherapy session?
Your first session will typically involve discussing your reasons for seeking psychological support, your mental health history, current concerns, and goals for therapy.
Ashleigh will explain how the telehealth process works, discuss confidentiality, and address any technical or procedural questions you might have.
9. How can I prepare for a telehealth psychotherapy session?
Treat the session as you would a face-to-face therapy session. Find a quiet place where you are least likely to be disturbed, you can be assured of your privacy, and you are in a seated, upright position.
Technical Setup: Ensure a stable internet connection and familiarize yourself with the video conferencing platform - Zoom - on your device. Computers and laptops are typically easier to use than handheld devices.
Private Space: Find a quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted.
Materials: Have a notepad and pen ready for taking notes, and prepare any questions or topics you want to discuss.
Feel free to have a hot drink with you, though it is requested that no food be consumed during your session.Â
10. Are there any tips for maximizing the effectiveness of telehealth psychotherapy?
Consistency: Attend sessions regularly and adhere to the agreed schedule.
Engagement: Actively participate and be open with your therapist about your thoughts and feelings.
Feedback: Provide feedback about what's working and what isn't, to tailor the therapy to your needs.
Telehealth psychotherapy offers a viable and effective alternative to traditional in-person therapy, expanding access to mental health care while maintaining high standards of treatment.
